2009 KSA Children, Cadet, Junior and Senior National Trials
It is indeed a pleasure to clarify a number of queries that had been sent to the KSA office pertaining to the 2009 Bloemfontein Trials. Please allow me to give clarity regarding the processes and then entertain a number of specific matters.
The selection of a SA Commonwealth Team for 2009 was motivated by the success of the SA team in Scotland in 2008. When the official invitation was received to participate in the 4th Commonwealth Karate Federation Championships, the KSA management scheduled a team selection event early in 2009 to guarantee an extended preparation program of the SA team.
The selection process was as follows:
Regions would select a team consisting of 4 members per specified division. These teams were then entered into the Bloemfontein national trials.
In Bloemfontein divisions were allocated to different floors to firstly compete on a “knock-out” (no reprecharge) basis. Once a winner of a floor was determined, a more specific selection of individuals was conducted by the selectors of that floor.
The Chief Referee of South Africa, Selwyn Rhoda and the Head Coach of South Africa, Peter Brandon were tasked to allocate a senior national qualified referee and an active senior coach for each floor to act as selectors. A relevant comment at this stage is that these had been without question the most senior and experienced karate practitioners in South Africa. Their knowledge, ability and expertise are beyond any question!
The above mentioned selectors were mandated to firstly complete the draw sheet as mentioned above. A selection process will then follow by relevant candidates competing against one another as requested by the selectors (senior national qualified referee and an active senior coach).
Parents and supporters had without question been confused with this procedure as it had not been the normal championship process! This had not been a championships or tournament of any kind but the selection of a South African team to represent our country at the Commonwealth Karate Championships.
In response to a number of letters received from individuals:
-The invitation and logistical detail regarding the event had been communicated to regions more than 45 days before the actual event. Confusion regarding the program could have been prevented with clearer communication from regions. This concern will be brought to the attention of regions.
-Each floor had been given the mandate to select the top 4 candidates in that division. In some instances, the divisions were split onto two floors but with the same mandate of selecting the 4 top candidates. These divisions were the joined on a single floor for the final selection. Candidates were ranked 1-4 by the selectors. The KSA NEC decided in 2008 to also recognize the medalists of the 2008 KSA events. Each category will thus comprise of two medalists from 2008 and two as selected by the panel in Bloemfontein. The KSA NEC will approve these candidates and a final approval for national representation will be given by SASCOC. The team will only be formally announced once the KSA NEC approved the selection.
-The bouts had been conducted according to WKF rules and any form of contact in especially the younger divisions must be penalized.
-Selectors had been allocated to floors by the Chief Referee and Head Coach making sure those individuals from similar styles and regions are not on the same floor. The NEC Technical Commission approved the allocation of selectors.
Lastly, we do understand the emotions of parents regarding the selection of a Protea Team. Be sure that Karate South Africa has no other intent but to select the strongest possible team to represent our country in the Commonwealth Karate Championships. For this purpose the highest qualified and experienced selectors in South Africa were appointed to select the team. Be also sure that this will not be the last chance for a practitioner of karate to represent of country! We will have similar events in future and will appreciate greater support of parents in the selection process!
Any further communication in this regard may be directed to my office and I shall personally respond to such communications!
The announcing of the SA Commonwealth Team will follow soon!

Report of the 2008 World Kumite Championships held in Pattaya, Thailand on August 29-30
Hoosain Narker, the Full Contact convenor for KSA, who was attending the tournament in his capacity as an Associate Member of the WKO, was mandated by the President of KSA to view the feasibility of the event as KSA is considering supporting this event by sending a National Protea Full Contact team to future events. According to Narker who was elected onto the WKO Executive, this event is certainly a spectacular event to support and it’s Executive comprise of many senior karateka from most of the major Full Contact styles.

Report of the Benin Tournament and UFAK Meeting by KSA President Leon Beech
It is really hard work in Benin in order to re-establish the credibility of Karate South Africa amongst the other African countries Because of the mistakes of the past. It is very evident that many countries have not forgotten the experience of the past few years and possibly view us with suspicion. The only countries from Zone Six who are present there are SA, Botswana and Mozambique. There are 22 countries present and Messrs Antonio Espinos (President of WKF) and George Yerolimpos (General Secretary of WKF) are also here and attended the UFAK Executive Meetings and the Extra Ordinary General Congress which took place last night. Our effort paid off with the UFAK Congress affording KSA the opportunity to host the UFAK Senior Championships in Cape Town in August 2010. Lots of hard work required but with all your expertise we can prove our capability to host such a spectacular event.
The following schedule was accepted:
2009 Junior and Cadets Alexandria, Egypt
2010 Seniors Cape Town, South Africa
2011 Junior and Cadets Morocco
2012 Seniors Algiers, Algeria
The draft Statutes was accepted with further opportunities to comment on the content, in order to improve the document. Similarly, a draft financial policy and organisational document was approved, with the opportunity, to refine the document in the future. Unfortunately, the language barrier between English and French speaking countries remain a challenge. Up north, French dominates and we consistently have to remind them to translate in order for us to understand. Antonio Espinos reported that significant progress was being made in getting karate into the Olympic Games in 2016. Apparently the decision will be made at an IOC meeting to be held in South Africa during this year. He requested KSA's support in this regard. Unfortunately they were not able to complete their NEC meetings by last night and resumed early this morning.
We await their response to our members to serve on the UFAK Commissions. The WKF donated four full tatamis to the host country (Benin) karate federation and also send two experts (referees) and (coaching) to offer courses during the programme. Our team arrived safely last night and we all successfully registered this morning. They went to the weigh-in and everybody met their weight requirement. I was privileged to have a meeting with the team this morning and encouraged them as ambassadors of South Africa to do their best and to make us proud. I also had a formal meeting with the Presidents of Botswana and Mozambique and they pledged support for KSA to host the Zone Six Karate Championships in Pretoria on 25 October 2008 and for us to have a meeting to encourage the other countries to support Zone Six. The weather is extremely humid and we were fortunate to get some rain today. The traffic is exceptionally hectic in that their major public transport is motor cycles. Not sure if there are any traffic rules because everybody just does what they like. Everybody is very friendly and thus far our very has been very pleasant.
The latest from Benin:
Three medals in first day. The competition is really tough, specifically in the kumite. Congratulations to:
Coral Jacobs - Silver in KATA
Brian Dukas - Bronze in KATA
Morgan Moss - Silver in KUMITE
